The Redmi Note 3 from Xiaomi is among the most impressive smartphones that I have used over the last year. Despite being priced at less than 15,000, the handset’s performance is absolutely stellar. This is largely due to the powerful Snapdragon 650 chipset found inside the heart of the handset.
However, despite coming with such a powerful chipset, the Redmi Note 3 cannot record videos in 4K resolution. The stock MIUI camera only allows the handset to record videos in Full HD resolution and at 720p in slo-mo. The inability to record videos in 4K resolution is not really a bummer, but it would definitely be a nice feature to have.
Now, even though the Redmi Note 3 does not support Lollipop’s Camera2 API, it is still possible to record videos in 4K resolution on the handset. Here’s how:
Step 1: Head over to the Google Play Store and download the Open Camera app. Link
Step 2: Open the app, slide from the left edge of the screen to bring the modes menu. Tap the cog icon located on the bottom right corner and head over tovideo settings and to Video Resolution.
Step 3: Then proceed to tap on the ‘Back camera video’ option and select ‘UHD 4K’ from the list.
Now, whenever you record videos using the Google Camera app on your Redmi Note 3, they will be recorded in 4K stabilisation. From my testing, I have noticed that videos recorded in 4K resolution offer significantly better details, but the stabilisation is not that effective in this mode.
